Ridgway’s downtown is one of the few in Colorado to be both a state-certified Creative District and a Graduate Main Street Community. Both programs are managed by the Town's Community Initiatives Facilitator under the Community Development department.
WHAT IS THE RIDGWAY CREATIVE DISTRICT?
The Ridgway Creative District (RCD) is an initiative of the Town to spur innovation and economic development while building community and supporting creativity and creative entrepreneurship. Ridgway has been certified as a creative district by Colorado Creative Industries, a department of the State Office of Economic Development and International Trade since 2013.
The Ridgway Creative District is also a defined physical location (downtown Ridgway, including River Park Light Industrial) and the people, businesses, and organizations within and around it who are doing something creative with their hands and/or their minds.
In pervious years, the RCD had a team of citizen volunteers called the Creative Advocacy Team (the C.A.T.). CAT meeting records available below.
WHAT IS THE RIDGWAY MAIN STREET PROGRAM?
Ridgway has earned graduate-level status as part of the Colorado Main Street Program through the Department of Local Affairs. Although Ridgway does not actually have a street called "Main Street" the program is geographically focused on the downtown Ridgway commercial and creative district.
Colorado Main Street Program helps communities build local capacity toward downtown revitalization. Each local program sets a vision for its community and consistently works toward achieving that vision. Colorado Main Street staff provides technical assistance, training, and small financial grants to help communities work toward these prerequisites and requirements.
The Main Street Program also requires engagement of a steering committee of volunteers and/or staff who have reviewed the Main Street Approach.
HOW DO THESE TWO PROGRAMS WORK TOGETHER?
In May 2021, the Ridgway Creative Advocacy Team merged the citizen engagement efforts of the RCD and Ridgway Main Street Program into one volunteer committee now called Ridgway Fuse, A Colorado Creative Main Street program.
